Nothing is spared in the Trance™ 7. It’s a captivating combination of Brooks’ best technologies, most luxurious materials, and stepped-up styling. The incredible cushioning of our full-length MoGo midsole and smooth stability of the PDRB® (Progressive Diagonal Roll Bar) only hint at its wealth of features. From sockliner to heel counter, no detail is overlooked and no indulgence is excluded.
Brooks improved the ride of this outstanding update by angling the forefoot slightly upward for a more natural feel at toe-off. It's also a half-ounce lighter. The plastic arch support of the Trance now lies below a layer of foam, which helps smooth out the feel underfoot. What's more, the outsole grooves under the heel have been repositioned to isolate and disperse impact forces more efficiently. We recommend it for runners with low to flat arches looking for a shoe with a smooth ride.

After making dramatic and well-received changes in the Trance 7, how could Brooks improve this stability ace even more? It’s the first shoe to incorporate the brand’s new BioMoGo midsole foam. That cushioning is said to biodegrade 50 times faster than conventional EVA material, but it’s also slightly softer and more resilient in a wider range of temperatures, and that results in an even smoother ride. The updated version of the Trance works best for heel-striking slight overpronators who enjoy an unencumbered
toe-off.
While both heel and forefoot energy absorption are top shelf, the heel feels rather plush (and not particularly “fast”), the toe-off feels low to the ground and responsive. Wear testers applauded the fit in the heel and the forefoot, but several suggested it was a bit snug in the midfoot. (Those with moderate or high-volume feet took advantage of the ghilley eyelets to open up the top of the midfoot and relieve pressure on the top of the foot.) Bottom line is that it's a reliable and super-stable trainer for high-mileage training.
The new Trance 8 is the first Brooks shoe built using biodegradable midsole foam, which means that it lasts only about 20 years in a landfill--versus the 1,000 years it takes most running-shoe soles to break down. In our tests, this new foam performed as well as the previous versions. Some testers commented on how well the Trance held their feet, while others found that the laces were difficult to adjust. Recommended for runners with normal to low arches looking for a shoe that's more environmentally friendly than most.
How do you improve on the award-winning Trance™ 7? You pack the Trance™ 8 with the same top-of-the-line technologies that made its predecessor an award winner and make it more environmentally friendly by adding BioMoGo, the world's first biodegradable midsole. Then you tweak the design to look sophisticated and clean. The result? Tons of cush wrapped in a pristine, new, "green" package.
