These unique high-mileage trainers got their name from a super-light foam Nike borrowed from the space industry, but you’ll immediately detect a buoyancy that makes you feel like an astronaut walking on the moon. That comes from the shoe’s innovative midsole construction, in which the soft and light foam is encased in a lightweight but slightly stiffer foam. The result is excellent energy absorption in a featherweight package that’s lighter than many racing flats. The neutral runners in our wear-test group found the ride to be a bit bouncy but surprisingly stable for such a soft shoe. The shoe has no heel notch, so many testers noted that it irritated or blistered their Achilles tendons, and the tongue is only lightly padded, so lace pressure is noticeable. Word of caution: The LunarTrainers have a very curved last and our test samples ran a tad short, both of which resulted in testers preferring a half size larger than they’d normally wear.
This shoe feels so light and flexible, it's hard to believe it will provide any protection--but it does, according to our lab tests. Our testers commented on how the shoe had a much better ride when running versus walking in them. The secret is a new featherlight foam insert, which needs to be encased in more traditional midsole compounds so it doesn't lose its shape. Recommended for the few biomechanically efficient runners who can train in such a minimal, lightweight shoe. For the rest of us, it's best for shorter races or speedwork.
