This model is used by many as an alternative racing shoe, offering added support and cushioning not normally found in racing flats. Also popular as a fast paced training shoe for shorter distance runs.
KEY FEATURES
• Lower profile Solyte midsole
• Space Trusstic and DuoMax provide midfoot support
• Extended PU plate system in forefoot to enhance windlass mechanism in gait
• Super lightweight upper materials with minimal reinforcement
• Introduction of the new Asymmetrical Lacing design to enhance Biomorphic Fit
The forefoot overlays have been removed on this update, so there's less chance for chafing and irritation. This helps give the toebox a bit more room. Runners who felt the Trainer 12 was too snug should take a look at the 13. The laces are off-center, following the actual topline of the foot for a more natural feel. Another nice bonus is the $10 drop in price. Recommended for biomechanically efficient runners or as a racing shoe for runners who train in stability shoes
Perhaps the most versatile of the performance shoes, the GEL-DS Trainer has won more awards than any shoe in this Review, including honors as our best shoe in this category. The use of BioMorphic fit has been enhanced by an asymmetrical seam at the toe which improves the fit through the metatarsal area, but gives it a shorter fit at the toe, at least for higher-arched feet. This new, snugger tailoring at the toe requires you to assess whether the shoe will fit you as it has in the past. The midsole tooling and dialed-in Solyte have improved the cushioning of the GEL-DS Trainer, while maintaining its racer-like characteristics and stable feel. The outersole continues with little change, providing the traction and flexbility that have won it praise in the past.
TESTER FEEDBACK: “Fits snug but like a glove. Very bouncy. Nice cushioning, though stable ride. No need to worry about twisting an ankle. Unique looking shoe. It’s a nice, innovative design.”
BOTTOM LINE: It’s snug-fitting, stable, and well cushioned; engineered to provide the ASICS ride in as light a package as possible.
Asics decided to forget that the previous few versions ever happened and built this update on the same specifications—last, midsole height, and sole firmness—as the DS Trainer 7. The result: a fantastic fit and feel, as many of our testers will attest. One disappointment, however, is the $10 price increase. An interesting environmentally friendly feature: the rice husk bits found in the outsole material, which offer better traction on wet surfaces. Recommended for efficient runners looking for a comfortable training shoe.
