From Running Times:

The 859 is the latest in New Balance’s stable of well-proportioned stability shoes, but without the overbuilt bulkiness of many of its contemporaries. It offers both a significant level of responsive cushioning and control in a secure, smooth-riding high-mileage vehicle. It’s rare that our wear-testers praise the support overlays sewn onto a shoe’s upper, but several thought they helped the upper to be as supportive as the midsole/outsole and contributed to the shoe’s well-balanced ride. As to be expected, lighter runners would have preferred a greater heel radius or softer crash pad because they were generally not able to compress the heel as well as their heavier counterparts, resulting in a slightly clunky heelstrike.

Default New Balance 859

From Runners World:

The 859 is as stable as this category gets. It's the stiffest shoe in the guide, with the same midsole and outsole as the 858, but a thicker sockliner that's cupped under the heel. This makes the shoe slightly more stable, since it holds the heel more firmly in place. Also new to this update is a memory-foam collar that hugs the shoe around the ankle. Some testers liked the new heel fit, while others felt it was somewhat overbuilt. Recommended for bigger runners looking for a stable workhorse of a shoe.
