The midsole’s mostly plastic heel was loved by runners who could feel it compress and rebound and unloved by runners who could not feel it compress. All testers agreed that to get your money’s worth out of this shoe, you’ve got to be a heel striker. The Creation’s “arch” support is not medially positioned, as one expects. Rather, it can be felt most directly under the center of the foot. While this feature would make our testers question as to whether or not they would buy the Creation, they did not believe it negatively affected the shoe’s performance. As is the case with most attached tongues, testers loved this one or hated it. If they hated it, it was because of the elastic strap on the lateral side of the midfoot.
The key change in this update is a redesigned collar that uses independent heel panels to maintain a snug ankle wrap as the foot hits the ground. Our testers had mixed reactions to this design: Many liked the additional stability, but a few questioned whether the fit was an improvement over the old collar design. Our lab tests show that the Creation has firm yet durable shock absorption. This is why we recommend it for bigger runners with high arches looking for a durable, everyday training shoe.
I have been using Kayano 14, and now I wanted to try Mizuno Wave creation 9. I am a heavy ruuner (around 190 lbs), My arch is mid-low and slight pronation.
What do you think is the performance of these shoes compared to Kayano 14?
The Creation has always been a Clydesdale's best friend, offering durable cushioning and a smooth ride. The latest version uses rubber pillars to connect the upper and lower Wave plates, which RW Shoe Lab tests show improve the cushioning slightly. The upper mesh is still extremely breathable, but bands have been added that run from the laces to the midsole. This design helps lock the upper over the arch. Recommended for runners looking for a firm, durable everyday trainer.

The women's Creation is significantly more flexible and softer than the men's, according to our Lab tests. This is due to an updated Wave plate with thinner reinforcing strips and, as with the men's, rubber between the Wave plates. To provide women with a more resilient forefoot, Mizuno also extended the outsole flex grooves the entire width of the shoe. The result is a comfortable fit and feel that our testers raved about. Recommended for women looking for a durable training shoe.
I am a heavy runner--220#. For the last year or so I have been plagued by compartment syndrome in the anterior tibialis of both legs. It all began after being told at a shoe store that I needed a stability shoe and was put into a pair of Pearl Izumis. Well, the Mizuno truck came to my local running store (NOT the store that prescribed the PIs) and I did the foot analysis that they offer. They put me into the Wave Creation 10 (a neutral shoe) and I haven't looked back. This is easily the best shoe I have ever bought. I'm sure it's wrong to place all the credit on the new shoe, but I haven't had any compartment syndrome issues since using the Mizuno WC and you'd be hard pressed to convince me that it's NOT the shoe. For me, this is a great shoe. I'm stuck on the brand now. Just ordered the Wave Ascend 4 for trail running.
