The Paragon represents what many Merrell groupies have been waiting for: a lightweight, low-profile shoe that is both airy and minimalist. The upper features a slip-resistant heel lining for controlled security that is complemented by a gender-specific anatomical curved-last fit. There is a lot going on underfoot with the Paragon, albeit in subtle ways. Up front, multiple flex grooves enhance flexibility, while added forefoot protection provides metatarsal shielding on uneven terrain. The women’s shoe features Merrell’s Q-Form motion control technology designed to counteract female-specific pronation. The unique ride either worked or didn’t for our testers: Some enjoyed the low-profile feel, and others commented that it was either too bare-bones or didn’t fit the shape of their foot, especially for those with lower-volume feet.
